JEA rates rise today, but lower fuel costs may offset electric bills

Lower fuel costs affect the electric bill; water and sewer costs rise in JEA’s example.

The big story

New rates take effect Oct. 1: electric rates rise 6.2%, and water and sewer rates rise 8%. Lower fuel costs pull the electric bill the other way. JEA projects an October bill $8.70 below April for a home using 1,000 kWh, while its example water-and-sewer bill for 6,000 gallons rises from $77.75 to $83.50. Your usage matters: JEA says its updated bill estimator calculates costs under the new rates. The basic electric charge is $21 a month, before usage and fuel charges.

Non-flying PreCheck members can request gate access from Friday

Gateside by TSA PreCheck launches Friday, Oct. 2, at Jacksonville International Airport. PreCheck members can register at TSA.gov for a mobile pass to accompany or greet a traveler beyond security even when they are not flying. Screening still applies, and passes may be capped on busy days. Active-duty military members and veterans can show their ID at the military lane for front-of-the-line screening, a TSA spokesperson says.

Duval’s School Board discusses guns in cars today

The proposed policy would let employees and other adults, not students, lawfully store guns in cars on school campuses and other district property, including during school events such as football games. The Oct. 1 workshop is open to the public. A final vote could come as soon as Nov. 10; that date is a possibility, not a confirmed vote.
